Our guide to the city of Bilbao is now live! Thinking of visiting the city, read our guide first, here is an excerpt…
In the 19th century, during the industrial revolution, the city’s links with Britain were even stronger with huge iron foundries and other heavy industry such as shipbuilding along the banks of the River Nervion. The local football team was founded by the English and is still known as Athletic Bilbao.
When Bilbao decided it needed a spectacular building and cultural clout to lift it out of decay, the site by the river was not inspiring but Gehry loved a challenge. Beneath the titanium fish scales, stone and glass are three levels with 20 galleries plus a large area for art structures, two cafes, a renowned restaurant and 300-seat auditorium.
The Guggenheim opened in 1997 and is considered one of architect Frank Gehry’s most emblematic creations.
